Do dream characters exist beyond the dream? I asked one.

I met a person in my dream last night and it was a friend I use to have several years ago in college, but we parted ways in life. I had a pleasant talk, some of it confusing and others enlightening, but personal stuff that I don't need to explain.

Then I got deep....
(I don't remember the exact words, but this is essentially what was said in more or less words:)
I ran out of things to talk about and I looked him straight in the face and asked, "You know this is a dream right?" He said yes. I asked, "Do you exist?" He said, yes, I exist in your head. (It made perfect sense to me at the time. I can see him, hear him, if I wanted to I could have touched him. He exists in all the ways we define existence in reality.) Then I asked, when you leave here, and I continue with the dream elsewhere, or if I wake up, do you still exist? He didn't answer and he turned and left around a corner, but I followed to keep my eye on him. Although viewing him from behind I felt like he had morphed and upon closer inspection, I was right. He was now a different person altogether. I yelled at him, "Do you remember who you are!" I tried to jar his memory, but it was too late. He was gone, and a new body took his place, without 'him' inside.

It was like i gave him life in my dream and accidentally took it away.

Some people feel that people in dreams exist somewhere as fellow dreamers, or beings in alternate dimensions, or on the almighty 'astral plane'.

What are your thoughts? Do they really exist? Or are they constructs of our minds, complete with full personality as real as the dream-buildings we see around them?

Well really, we all exist everywhere at all times. We all just aren't cognitive of this at all times.
It makes perfect sense to me that I could be existing somewhere else as well and interacting with others on that level without "MY" consciously being aware of it.

OR... it could all have been created from your own mind. Either option is awesomely cool to consider. :)

I absolutely believe that I have interacted with some entities that exist objectively.

Oh you definitely have. At least per my experiences.

What we experience in the non-physical is a subjective interpretation of an objective event.
You did REALLY interact with "something" or "someone"... just how you interpreted that experience is what's subjective.

So what I mean is that the "hooded figure" (for example) we meet while projecting, obviously isn't a hooded figure at all... it REALLY IS an entity (be it from within or external to you), but you're interpreting that experience as a hooded figure instead of what their true form is. Your consciousness probably won't have anything to draw upon from for you to "see" their true form though, so it comes to you as the next best thing your consciousness can find from your previous experiences: A hooded figure. That's the most acceptable interpretation your consciousness can use to make it understandable to you.
