So, I've also done this with the Astral Pulse...
We're getting much less spam here than the Pulse, but I'm still switching it over to Requiring Approval to join.

It shouldn't really cause much of an issue, but it will stop ANY of them spam that has been happening here until I have the time to setup new defenses.
Some of the package installations can take a couple hours unfortunately. LoL

We did that for a little bit at the AD, and it was quite the nightmare. It may be different for you, since it's not so many people administrating. Anyway, good luck, you're definitely going to be a busy boy.

For this forum, it'll be a breeze... hehe
The Astral Pulse will be a different story, as you suggest.
We've brought on some new people and most of the new registrants are clearly spammers... it's almost like they don't even try. LoL
But yeah, we're hoping it's not going to be too bad... but it'll have to do until Adrian upgrades to new forum software. Sadly.

Hey Xanth,

You could try installing this phpBB3 mod:

https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/ ... block_mod/

And also:

https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/ ... ha_plugin/

Simultaneously.

I haven't had a single spam join my forum in about 6 months, no registration approval required.

Best of luck.
Killing the dds attacks will be a bonus to the site. Hope the upgrade does this automatically.

Well, nothing will get rid of the DDOS on the Pulse until the dude who is sending it gives up.
The first step is to get rid of the spam though. That's killing us more than anything I believe.

Thanks Jettins! I'll look into those!

Much appreciated! :)

Someone keeps DOSing? Just block his IP.

If it was a DOS attack, we could and that would be the end of it.

However, this is a DDOS attack. The first D stands for "distributed".
This means it's coming from LOTS of different computers all over the world. All of these computers are hijacked with trojans/viruses, which allows the DDOS'er to use them covertly to send millions of server requests for second to the Astral Pulse servers. In the Pulses case, it's THOUSANDS of separate IP addresses hitting the Astral Pulse servers all at once. Unfortunately, Adrian can't block them all.

If every member of the pulse had a suitable cleaner to remove the ' infection' from their device. Would this help at all?
A program to do this should already exist.
You cant log in if you're not a member.
Or is it anyone infected viewing the site? Ouch.

What it is is one kid (curtis.fred, you might remember him) who has control of a botnet (thousands of compromised computers all over the world).
He directs each of those computers to send *thousands* of server requests per second, which overloads the Pulses systems.
He also directs each of those computers, through an automated process, to attempt to create accounts for the sole purpose of spamming.

Yeah, he hates us. :)

He needs to grow up, ideally in jail. Im sure he'll enjoy the servicing of his bots then. A pointless mixed up kid.

Yeah really.
I mean, if it comes to that, Adrian WILL serve him... but Adrian is super-nice and doesn't want to ruin a kids life unless he direly needs to.
I mean, the kid *IS* fully liable for any money lost by this. He doesn't realize that Adrian sells web hosting space on his servers for companies to host their websites.
Poor kid has no idea he's on the line for a lot of money if Adrian wants it. These servers house a lot more than just the Astral Pulse.

Adrian is an ex-internet security adviser. He knows where to get all the info he needs. He already has everything on the kid and his family.
Hell, he's had the kids' internet connection booted from the net once already via his ISP due to Adrian. lol

So I installed a couple new mods which should keep the spammers away now.
I've switched this forum back to immediate, no activation required. We'll see how the new countermeasures work. :)

Hopefully, when Adrian upgrades the forum, I'll be able to install them there!
