Forum Features!

Postby Xanth » Wed Mar 20, 2013 7:16 pm

Are there any particular forum features anyone would like to see here?

I'm quite open to just about anything...

A rating system? A "like", for liking the posts you... well... LIKE! LOL :)

Ideas?

I'm probably going to play with the Theme and Style a bit soon. This particular theme is default and is kind of blah to me... lol Anyone prefer a "light" or "dark" theme?

Light is usually easier on the eyes in my opinion. I don't know much about a like system, but sometimes I have the urge to like something but not necessarily comment. But I don't know of any potential problems either. Didn't they get rid of that system on Astral Pulse or something? I dunno, I'm just talking randomly. :D

I wouldn't mind a like system, there should probably be a dislike system as well incase I go overboard about something negative. That will happen.

Oh any chance you can make the avatar size just a bit bigger?

I'm unsure about a "dislike" system... we had something like that on the Astral Pulse, and it tends to get abused. I'm not saying anyone here would, do that... but new people, I'm not so sure of.

A "like" system is something I definitely want to add though.

By keeping these in their own forum it would be much easier to access the posts pertaining to them.

I love experimenting with new things, as most of you already know. It keeps this practice always "new" to me.

That's a great idea! I'll put it under the Media section... rename that Media & Tools

There's no file size limit anymore. I'll increase the max dimensions a bit more... 200 x 200? We'll see how that looks.

A good definition of contrast for those with eyesight difficulties. Using a phone constantly with its smaller size is my preference. (its practical).
So far its ok.

What about a feature that would hide certain parts of our comments. Sometimes I'll read something and want to reply but my thoughts might be completely at odds with the original poster's.

For example, even though I will always be respectful in my replies, sometimes what I have to say may be negative to the original message, so if they want to read that part, they will have to purposely click on a button to show the part of my reply that I wanted to say but didn't want to cram it down their mouth, so to speak.

I think youtube has a similar feature for messages that have been voted down, only it hides the entire reply. I'm talking about partial concealment though and it would be our personal choice.

Is that possible? I understand that just hiding it almost guarantees that they will read it anyways but this way, they can only get upset at themselves for choosing to see it. In theory anyhow.

I'm not even sure if such a thing exists! lol

There's stuff like:
Code: Select all
Put stuff in here... but I don't think this box is closeable

Another forum that I sometimes visit has a "Thank You" button. I find it invaluable, when someone says something amazing and sublime and 'just what I needed to hear' type of thing, but don't want to clog the forums saying 'thank you for that'. Just a thought.

I've found a mod to do that. I just need to take the time to implement it.
Sadly, mods aren't really easily "installed"... there's some code editing to implement for it to work. I'll try do to it this weekend though. :)

It's a feature I've always liked too.

The post "thanking" feature is now active!

When reading threads, each post will have a thumbs up icon next to the quote button.

It looks like I need to mess with the permissions a bit more, but most sub forums should have them! :)

Let me know if this isn't the case.

I think you should make both a light and a dark theme. I personally find the dark theme better for my eyes and my night time postings. That said, the default one should probably be light because more people find it readable.

I would do that... but I think if I put some new styles in here, you'd lose access to the "Give Thanks" system.

To retain it, I'll need to edit this style instead of adding new ones. That's gonna be intriguing... LoL

That's what tripped me up to begin with...
You can't see the thumbs up button on your own posts.
Try going to a thread with other people on it, you SHOULD see it.

Otherwise, I'll have to play with the permissions a bit more.

I still haven't been able to spot the thank thing either :/ I hope I'm not just being oblivious.

Ok, so after a couple hours of searching I finally found the answer.

The "Thanks" works fine, if you're not seeing the thumbs up icon, then you'll need to clear your cache and delete your cookies.
That fixed it for me here at work.

If you're still not seeing it, then that means I screwed up the permissions while trying to figure out why it wasn't working. LOL
You'll find the thumbs up icon to the right of the "Quote" button on each post.
