So it is not just me.
I too have wondered if I can stay aware during the death process, just like a night of dreams.
But who knows what death is actually like? It's hard to discuss, being a taboo subject at dinner parties.

It could be a lucid dream, or it could be like that 'brain dead' state of sleep I get where I don't dream at all. Pure nothingness and you don't even know it. No time, no space.

Is it a waste of time to spend your entire life preparing for death? Depends on how you imagine what after life is. Whatever it is, we humans are the only ones capable on this planet of even attempting to do such a thing. So hey why not?
I close my eyes and see what I can see, whatever it may be.
It could be the sea, or I could see a bee.
Don't you see? It doesn't matter to me. Just let it be!
(written by a great poet after a dream... ME!)
